We had reported last month that ZTE’s sub brand Nubia was working on a successor to the Nubia Z11 mini of last year. On the 6th of April, those rumours were confirmed with the reveal of the Nubia Z17 mini. The device was officially teasedby brand ambassador Cristiano Ronaldo prior to its reveal with the celebrity footballer praising its dual-rear camera set-up.
The phone has an all-metal chassis with a 5.2-inch full HD (1080 x1920) LTPS display clad under 2.5D curved glass fascia. As was rumoured the device comes in two hardware configurations, one bearing a Snapdragon 625 SoC coupled with 4 GB of RAM and one featuring a Snapdragon 653 SoC with 6 GB of RAM. Both the models have the Adreno 510 GPU and 64 GB of storage which can be expanded through a hybrid-microSD card slot. To power all this hardware Nubia have outfitted the smartphone with a 2950mAh Li-Poly battery. For the software, the device is running on Nubia UI 4.0 which is skinned flavour of Android, v6.0, Marshmallow.
The real draw on the device though are the twin 13-megapixel sensors on the back, one a monochrome and other is colour, with an f/2.2 aperture, PDAF support and dual-LED flash. The selfie snapper up-front is a 16-megapixel sensor with an f/2.0 aperture and a 80° wide-field of view lens. On the back the device also features a fingerprint scanner.
The Nubia Z17 mini would be available from April 12th in China. Pricing starts at ¥1,699 (~$250) for the 4 GB variant and the higher end 6 GB model is priced at ¥1,999 (~$290) in Black, Gold and Red liveries. A more important development though is that ZTE is also allowing Nubia to launch this phone officially in the EU, Indian and a couple more unspecified markets in late May. This is interesting since Nubia has mostly been restricted to China. Official details on pricing are still not available so stay tuned for updates on point.
