The Xiaomi Redmi Note 5 will be the successor to the current best seller, the Redmi Note 4 in India. And because of that, the upcoming new budget phone is a highly anticipated mid-ranger. Since the Redmi Note 4 was unveiled in January 2017, there is considerable time before we see the sequel. However, some specs have leaked on the eternal rumour-spewing machine, Weibo, in China.
The interesting leak states that the Redmi Note 5 will sport the new Snapdragon 660 SoC. Earlier, the phone was tipped to sport the MediaTek Helio P25 SoC. But there isn’t any conflict here. We know that Xiaomi ships Indian versions of the Redmi Note with Qualcomm processors. So, it is highly likely, they will come with Snapdragon 660 SoCs. The new chipsets will also represent an upgrade over the present Snapdragon 625 that now sits on the current Redmi Note 4.
Also, in line with last year, 3 GB + 32 GB variant and 4 GB + 64 GB variant are rumoured. It is worth pointing out that the 660 SoC supports Qualcomm’s Quick Charge 4.0 but unclear whether it will be enabled out of the box. The phone houses a 4,000 mAh battery, Dual SIM, Bluetooth, WiFi, 3.5mm headphone jack, Infrared sensor and a micro USB port. The new models should also ship with Xiaomi’s proprietary MIUI 9 skin mixed with Android 7.0 Nougat.
The Redmi Note 5 3 GB version should cost around 999 yuan (Roughly Rs. 9700) and the 4 GB. Xiaomi should debut the Redmi Note 5 in January next year as long as there is no change in the standard 1-year launch cycle.
