Android Go Edition is Google’s attempt to provide the best possible Android experience on an entry-level hardware. Basically, it’s an optimized version of Android for phones with as little as 512MB of RAM featuring lite versions of Android apps. With Go Edition installed, one could save up to 50 percent of their total memory giving more space to run other apps more flawlessly.
Rumors of the NOKIA 1 running Android 8.1 Oreo (Go Edition) began circulating on the internet this week. Although no solid evidence has been presented yet, the speculation is not that far from possibility. However, as we are yet scarce of information about the device, there’s no reason to give it a full attention and so we’ll categorize it as “illusory”.
But if there is something that deserve an Android Go Edition right now, it’s the already been released NOKIA 2. The phone’s specs fall into an entry-level class and to think how heavy the app gets every future update, this phone won’t survive months until the user experience some freezing and force closing of apps. Its 1GB of RAM paired with an old budget processor isn’t meant for a long time flawless Android experience.
Technically speaking no as a product can not be upgraded to Go but we will integrate memory management features and other perf improvements with 8.1based maintenance release.

Juho Sarvikas, Chief Product Officer for HMD Global, confirmed on Twitter that NOKIA 2 isn’t moving to Go Edition program. According to him, a phone can’t be upgraded to Android Go (that means, Android Go should come preinstalled out of the box) but he insist that the upcoming Android 8.1 Oreo update for the NOKIA 2 will include several memory management enhancement and performance optimization based on Android Go.
While NOKIA 2 isn’t exactly getting the perks of an Android Go such as curated Go Edition apps on the Google app store, it’s a good thing that HMD is keeping their promises. Sarvikas didn’t mentioned when the update will start rolling out, but we suspect that it should come as early as this month. So stay tuned.
