How To Enable QoS On Your Router?

However, here are the steps to enable QoS on the three most popular routers: TP-Link, NETGEAR, and DD-WRT. Following these steps will allow you to set up QoS on any router firmware.

Step 1: Setup Clear Goals

If you are on an important Skype conference call with your boss and your wife starts streaming a movie on Amazon, you will see that the quality of your Skype call drops instantly. But with the QoS enabled, your router can prioritize specific tasks, applications, and services over less important things (Skype Over Torrent).

But before allowing the QoS switch on your router, you have to set up clear goals. The QoS rules are applicable to both services and devices on your network. Therefore, you must have clear goals before you begin.

Step 2: Determine Your Connection Speed

The QoS feature is only effective if your Wifi offers decent speed in order to keep multiple devices and services running efficiently. However, a router with poor Internet connectivity is useless even with the QoS enabled. Every QoS setup will need you to enter your Upload and Download rate while it is set up. Therefore, always have it ready.

Steps To Enable QoS (TP-LINK)

  • Launch your Internet browser
  • Type “192.168.1.1” in the address bar
  • Log in with your username and password you set up for the router (Default Username: admin, Default Password: admin)
  • Locate the option which reads “Advanced Setup.”
  • Tap on “QoS”
  • Check the box in front of QoS “Activated” to enable QoS
  • Check the box in the front to Active “Activated.”
How to Enable QoS on TPLink Router
  • Check all the boxes in front of “Physical Ports.”
  • Under “Application,” you can prioritize devices or services. (TCP, DHCP, etc.)

Steps To Enable QoS (NETGEAR)

  • Launch your Internet browser
  • Type in “routerlogin.com” or put in the IP address “192.168.1.1”
  • Log in with your username and password you set up for the router ( Default Username: admin, Default Password: password)
  • Locate the QoS option on the left

(Some NETGEAR routers offer dynamic QoS settings. These settings, when enabled, will automatically monitor the control and network usage accordingly )

  • Click on the “Advanced” tab.
  • Enter your Internet Speed. Note that the test value should be between 80-90%
How to Enable QoS on Netgear Router
  • Now, you can add tools either by service (Steaming/Skype) or by devices (PC/Laptop) under the “Add Rules.”
  • Add them under the “Add” tab. 
  • Under “Device Priority,” you can assign different priorities (Highest/ high / medium/low) to your applications.

Steps To Enable QoS (DD-WRT)

  • Type in “routerlogin.com” or put in the IP address “192.168.1.1”
  • Log in with your username and password you set up for the router ( Default Username: admin, Default Password: password)
  • Once logged in, click on the option which reads “NAT / QoS.“
  • Select “QoS.”
  • Tap on “Enable”

  • Set the Port to “WAN.”
  • Insert the “Downlink” and “Uplink” values
  • Click on “Apply Settings.”

Here are the different ways using which you prioritize your Internet traffic using the QoS feature

1. Prioritize By Service

An important Skype call with your Boss or a zoom meeting with your team leader is something that you will require you to put out your utmost devotion. In addition, you need your Internet connection to be fast and stable the whole time you are on the call. But that won’t be possible if you are using a shared or crowded network. However, with the QoS switch enabled, you can assign different priorities ( Highest/high/medium / low ) to your applications.

  • Launch your Internet browser
  • Type in “routerlogin.com” or put in the IP address “192.168.1.1”
  • Log in with your username and password you set up for the router ( Default Username: admin, Default Password: password)
  • Navigate the QoS setup

  • Navigate to “Add Priority Rule”
  • Under “Add Priority Rule,” you will get four options (service/device/IP address/MAC address)
  • Select “Service”
  • To add a service, tap on “Add” under the Service name

2. Prioritize By Device (IP Address)

Apart from services and applications, the QoS also lets you prioritize Internet traffic by the device(s) connected. Suppose you are planning on using your device (mobile/laptop/desktop) to perform several essential tasks during the day.

In that case, you can assign  different priorities (Highest/high/medium/low) accordingly to the device in use. All you need to do is type in the system’s IP address into the QoS menu, and the feature will automatically take care of the bandwidth for you.

  • Launch your Internet browser
  • Type in “routerlogin.com” or put in the IP address “192.168.1.1”

This step is applicable if you are using different network adapters at once on your system. If you have Ethernet and Wifi, both adapters will be prioritized based on their network metric. The metric network value will then determine the primary connection that your device uses to send and receive Internet traffic.

But several latest OS allows you to configure and prioritize these adapters manually. Similarly, you can use the QoS feature on your Wifi router to priorist your internet traffic as per the interface (Ethernet, Wifi, etc.)

4. Prioritize By Device (MAC address)

If you are planning on using your device (mobile/laptop/desktop) to perform several essential tasks during the day, you can assign  different priorities (Highest/high/medium/low) accordingly to the device in use. All you need to do is type your MAC address into the QoS menu and the feature will automatically take care of the bandwidth for you.

To prioritize your Netgear simulator by entering your Mac address, follow the given steps:

  • Launch your Internet browser
  • Type in “routerlogin.com” or put in the IP address “192.168.1.1”
  • Log in with your username and password you set up for the router (Default Username: admin, Default Password: password)
  • Navigate the QoS setup
  • Select “Setup QoS Rule.”
  • Navigate to “Add Priority Rule”
  • Under “Add Priority Rule,” you will get four options (service/device (interface )/IP address/MAC address)
  • Select “MAC Address”

How To Use QoS To Limit Bandwidth?

The QoS can help you prioritize your Internet applications or connected devices accordingly. With the QoS switch, you can assign different priorities (Highest/high/medium/low) to your applications or devices. This ensures that you have enough bandwidth to carry out essential applications.

Another essential feature is that the QoS allows you to limit the bandwidth usage for traffic on a narrow or broad cycle. The QoS Profile Rule lets you set a specific bandwidth limit for individual tasks or combined services or devices. 

To use QoS to limit bandwidth, follow the steps given.

Limit  your bandwidth on a TP-LINK Router

  • Launch your Internet browser
  • Type “ 192.168.1.1” in the address bar
  • Log in with your username and password you set up for the router ( Default Username: admin, Default Password: admin )
  • Locate the option which reads “Advanced Setup.”
  • Tap on “QoS” 
  • Go to “Settings”
  • Check the box in front of “Enable Bandwidth Control.”
  • Save The Settings
  • Select the option which reads “Rules List.”
  • Tap on “Add New” to insert a new rule
  • Configure the newly added rule

Limit Your Bandwidth On A NETGEAR Wifi Router

  • Launch your Internet browser
  • Type in “routerlogin.com” or put in the IP address “192.168.1.1”
  • Log prioritize, with your username and password you set up for the router ( Default Username: admin, Default Password: password)
  • Locate the “Advanced” tab in the main menu
  • Go to “Setup”
  • Tap on “QoS Setup.”
  • Select “Qos Setup Rule.”
  • Tap on “Add Priority Rule.”
  • Enter your IP address in the Primary Category menu
  • Tap on the radio button on the table
  • Under Priority, you can assign different priorities ( Highest/high/medium / low ) to your applications or devices.
  • Apply and Save your settings. 

Can QoS Create Problems?

As we mentioned earlier, the Quality of Service switch on your wifi router helps prioritize Internet traffic as per the service or device connected. The QoS keeps enough bandwidth aside to ensure that all the connected devices or ongoing services go on smoothly.

However, many have reported that switching the QoS switch on their router has created connectivity problems. While the QoS helps prioritize Internet traffic, it often slows down other Internet-based applications.

Though it reserves enough bandwidth for multiple devices and services, it is known to slow down essential connections. The QoS is a crucial feature to have when on a crowded network. However, the QoS switch can at times misinterpret devices and cripple your upload speed all together. While it can theoretically do some good on very crowded networks, QoS can also create more problems than it solves.
