Yesterday, SONY launched its flagship Xperia XZ Premium smartphone in India. This is the second major launch by SONY following in the footsteps of the earlier SONY Xperia XZs launched in April.
The Xperia XZ Premium is the second handset from SONY’s stable to feature a native 4K display but for a first, it is the world’s first smartphone display with HDR support. The handset is powered by Qualcomm’s flagship SoC for the year, the Snapdragon 835 featuring an octa-core CPU coupled with a Mali G71 GPU. This makes the XZ Premium the first Snapdragon 835 based device to be launched in India. Complementing the premium chipset at the heart of the handset are 4 GB of RAM and 64 GB of storage, expandable via microSD card. The 19-megapixel sensor at the rear features SONY’s brand new Motion Eye technology which allows it to record HD (720 x1280) content @960fps (super-slo-mo). The selfie camera up front is no slouch either, featuring a 13-megapixel wide-angle lens. Powering all this hardware is a 3230mAh battery unit.
In keeping up with SONY’s premium build quality, both the front and the back of the device are clad under a layer of Corning’s Gorilla Glass 5. The smartphone is also IP68 certified for dust and water ingress protection. The device features a USB Type-C connector which supports the Qualcomm Quick Charge 3.0 standard for rapid recharging. Out of the box, the XZ Premium is expected to be running a minimally skinned flavour of Android v.7.1, Nougat.
The official MSRP for the smartphone is ₹61,990 but it has already been listed on Amazon India for ₹59,990. Customers can choose between the two colour options of Luminous Chrome and Deepsea Black. Pre-order bonuses include a SONY SRS-XB20 Bluetooth worth ₹8,990 free (for orders up to 11 June) and three months free subscription to SONY LIV.
