Last year, HMD made noise at the MWC 2017 when they presented a revamped version of the legendary Nokia 3310. Despite not having anything unique to offer, the phone got so much attention from the show’s attendees. Now, seems like HMD is continuing the trend as another classic Nokia phone is heading to MWC later today. Insert the Nokia 8110, the phone best remembered for its appearance in the 1999 Hollywood movie “The Matrix”. In case you haven’t seen it (or missed the exact scene), I embedded a video below. Enjoy.
Polish website Spider’s Web shared some press renders of the Nokia 8110, claiming it to debut at the MWC later today. According to the report, the rekindled version of the Nokia 8110 will start selling in May of 2018 for the price of EUR 79 (approx. 100 USD, Rs. 6,290) and will be run on a modified version of YunOS. It will also support 4G networks and has WiFi and hotspot compatibility.
The YunOS, which currently powers the Nokia 3310 4G, is developed by Alibaba Cloud and is based on Android Open Source Project (AOSP). While fully cloud-based, the YunOS is capable of running Android apps natively and has its own app store.
HMD is going to launch new Nokia phones later today, February 25, starting 4 PM, local time in Barcelona, Spain. Sign up to Nokia Mobile’s Facebook event to get notified when the live stream starts.
