We have been waiting eagerly for the next smartphone from OnePlus. The Chinese company that stormed onto the Android OEM scene with the moniker of NEVER SETTLE and started a trend of releasing “flagship killer” handsets that gave the best of flagship devices a run for their money thanks to its stellar hardware and polished software. OnePlus has had its share of ups and downs but since its last major launch of the OnePlus 3 and 3T the company has been on the rise and plans are bound for its next device, the OnePlus 5.
We have already been in the know that OnePlus will be skipping the 4 thanks to the number carrying unsavoury connotations in the home country of China. Till now most of the information on the device was from isolated leaks and hearsay but today it seems that the device was listed on GearBest.com today, with its complete hardware complement (image below).
Hardware and internals
As we can see that the upcoming OnePlus 5 is listed as a 4G Phablet with a Qualcomm Snapdragon 835 clocked @2.35GHz taking centre-stage coupled with 8 GB of RAM and 64 GB of internal storage which is expandable via microSD card (up to 128 GB). The display on the device is a 5.5-inch QHD (1440 x2560) resolution panel. A 23-megapixel has been listed on the rear with no details to the secondary shooter while the selfie-snapper up front is a 16-megapixel sensor. Furthermore, it has been detailed that the device will come with a 4000mAh battery to keep the juice flowing and all this while, it has been running a variant of OxygenOS based on Android v.7.1.1, Nougat.
For device connectivity and additional features, the handset comes with support for telephony bands up to the 4G LTE standard on dual nano SIM’s, Bluetooth v.4.2, GPS and WiFi 802.11 upto ac standard support. Furthermore for hardware interconnectivity and charging purposes the phone has a USB Type-C port and a 3.5mm audio jack. All of these details come alongside a release window of soon.
Design and aesthetic
From the listing images on GearBest we can see that the OnePlus 5 is a refinement of the OnePlus design language, the bezels have been reduced yet again, so has the chin and forehead of the device which has allowed for a rather impressive ~75% screen-to-body ratio. The phone listing also stated that the device dimensions are 15.27 x7.47 x0.70cm and a weight of ~156 gm.
Up-front the design has not changed much from the OnePlus 3 days but the rear layout has been substantially altered. With a dual-camera module housed at the back with a minimal of a bump (as far as we can see in the image) and what reminds us of a similar texture on the back as the original OnePlus One. Surprisingly the LED flash sits outside the camera module with the 1+ brand logo below it. There are no extra lines, bold contours or any abrupt changes to the sleek simplicity but rather a simple refined elegance.
In the final roundup, we can see the phone clearly is a powerhouse to reckon with, toppling the Samsung Galaxy S8 and S8+ and the SONY XZ Premium in the Geekbench scores. The device clearly benefits with certain choices and compromises that were made to make it a balanced device to bear the “flagship killer” moniker. It might not be the best, it might not be the fastest but it sure as hell would not be the most expensive device out there.
The tentative pricing of the device is $689.10 (~₹44,200) on the site which might be subjective to change depending on the availability, demand and finally the popularity of the OnePlus 5.
Suffice to say, we cannot wait to see what the final product will look like and how will it make us NEVER SETTLE, once again. Follow us on our social media to keep up to date with the latest in the world of Android.
