So it is no surprise that many people choose their products more than any other networking hardware manufacturers. However, while Netgear products are known for their reliability, sometimes it also fails. Thankfully, most of the time, it can also easily be fixed with just a few steps.
Netgear router WIFI not working? Don’t worry, in this article; we will try to diagnose the issue with your Netgear router and also give you a few solutions on how to fix it.
Issues | Why is my Netgear router not working?
As mentioned, Netgear products are well known for their reliability. However, it can also fail sometimes, which could potentially hinder your experience. Here are just some of the most common failures most users reported about Netgear routers.
1. Netgear router setup
Sometimes, you experience problems like accessing the web address or your account before you can even use your router. This is usually caused by incorrect web address or username or password. Perhaps also your Internet isn’t working, or your cables to routers are not installed properly.
2. Netgear router update
One of the most common issues that Netgear router users have encountered is mostly caused by dated software their current device is running on. Always update your router, even the Netgear Modem Firmware update and take advantage of the available fixes. More of this later.
3. Netgear router reset
Just like your gadgets, the router also needs some reset to refresh its OS. This needs to be done if you feel like your router is having some issues that you weren’t able to fix even after the update.
4. The Netgear router not connecting to the Internet
This is also one of the most common problems Netgear users encounter. This could be related to the issues mentioned above, or a problem with your installation, or Internet service provider (ISP) itself. Don’t worry; we will help you diagnose this issue in this article.
5. Netgear router not working after reset
While resetting a device could potentially resolve existing issues, it can also possibly cause problems with the system. This is normal since you will usually have to set things up again to make it work.
How to Fix Netgear Router?
1. Check Netgear modem lights
Every Netgear router comes with LED panels for easier problem diagnosis and troubleshooting. The following are the indicator if something is working or not working right with your Netgear router.
- Off – if the power LED on your router is off, then it is more likely not receiving power.
- Solid green or white – if the power LED on your router is lighting solid green or white that means it is ready.
- Solid amber – if your router is showing solid amber, this means your router is powering on.
- Blinking amber – a blinking amber power LED either means your router’s firmware is upgrading or the Reset button was pressed.
- Blinking white – if the power LED in your router is blinking white that means the firmware is corrupted.
- Blinking white or amber – If you have a Netgear R8000 router, a blinking white or amber power LED means the router is in AP mode.
- Off – if the Internet LED is turned off, this means no Ethernet cable is connected between the router and the modem.
- Solid green or white – if the Internet LED lights solid green or white, this means the Internet connection is ready.
- Solid amber – if the Internet LED lights solid amber, this meansthe router detected an Ethernet cable connection to the modem.
- Blinking white – if the Internet LED is blinking white, this means the port is sending or receiving traffic.
2.4 GHz and 5 GHz Wi-Fi LEDs
- Off – if the 2.4 and 5 GHz Wi-Fi LEDs are off, this means the 2.4GHz and 5GHz Wi-Fi radios are off.
- Solid white – if it lights up solid white, that means the 2.4 GHz and 5 GHz Wi-Fi radios are operating.
- Blinking – if it is just blinking, this means the router is sending or receiving traffic.
- Off – if the USB LEDs are off, this means no USB device is connected, or the Safely Remove Hardware button was pressed and you can remove the attached USB device.
- Blinking – if it is blinking, this means a USB device is plugged in and is trying to connect.
- Solid green or white– If it is just a solid green or white, this means the USB device is connected and ready.
The color of the Ethernet LEDs indicates the speed that is available for your connection. The white or green is forGigabit Ethernet connections, whilst amber LED color is for 100 Mbps or 10 Mbps Ethernet connections.
- Off – if the Ethernet LED is off, that means no device is connected to this Ethernet port.
- Solid – if the Ethernet LED lights solid, this means the powered-on device is connected to the Ethernet port.
- Blinking–if the Ethernet LED is blinking the port is sending or receiving traffic.
- Off – if the WPS LED is turned off, this means no WPS connection exists.
- Blinking – if it is blinking, this means the WPS connection is in progress.
- Solid–if it is just solid light, then WPS connection was successful.
2. Netgear router has no internet
If the Internet LED indicator tells you that you have no Internet connection, then the following steps will guide you on how to fix this connection issue with your Netgear router.
- Unplug the power cords of your Netgear modem and router, then connect the Ethernet cable from the modem to the router’s Internet port.
- Connect the Ethernet cable from your computer to any of the router’s available LAN ports, then reinsert the battery backup and reconnect the power of the modem. Wait until all lights stable.
- Return the router’s power and wait until the power light becomes solid green. A solid green LED indicator means your router is ready.
- Open a web browser of your choice, and enter the IP address of the router (that is http://192.168.1.1.1) then press Enter.
- Enter your account password and username if prompted.
3. Netgear router troubleshooting
Now that your router is up and running, it is now time to troubleshoot what went wrong. Make sure to check everything that we put on bullets below.
- Make sure you entered a correct web address, username, and password.
- If you get an error getting through the web address, try to clear the cache on your chosen web browser, then restart it again. Restarting your computer or smartphone will also help.
- You can also try logging into the IP address of your router (this could either be http://192.168.1.1 or http://192.168.0.1) instead of visiting any web address.
- You still can’t access the login age for your router, try using a device that is connected via wired Ethernet connection, or a different device.
- Note that the router login page may not work if you are connected to multiple networks at the same time. For example, if you are both connected through wired and wireless, also through VPN or corporate connections. Disconnect from all of the connections and try connecting to your Netgear router again.
- Aside from mixed-up connections, you should also deactivate pop-up blockers, firewalls and ad-blocking software temporarily to see if any of these cause access problems to the username and password of the router login.
- Restart the router, modem, and device that is connected to your router, but if none of the steps above solves the login problem with your router, perform a factory reset.
4. Reset your Netgear router
If none of the troubleshooting tips above worked for you, then you should try to reset your Netgear router. Note that resetting your router means you have to start setting it up again. And it will be a tedious work sometimes.
- Locate the Restore Factory Settings, or you can also use the Reset button at the back of your router.
- Press and hold the Restore Factory Settings, or press the Reset button at the back of your router for like 7 seconds. Release and wait for few seconds until your router reboots.
- If the LED lights stops blinking, and showing just a solid green lights, that means your router is done resetting and is ready.
5. Update the firmware on your Netgear modem
If the troubleshooting tips or reset didn’t work for you, perhaps your router needs some firmware update. To do this, follow the following steps.
- Launch a web browser on your device connected to the Netgear modem.
- Visit http://www.routerlogin.net, then enter your router’s credentials.
- Go to “Advanced” then, click “Administration”.
- Tap on “Firmware Update” or “Router Update” to initiate firmware update. Tap on “Check”, to check if there is an update available. Click “Yes” to install the update.
