With the advent of Reliance Jio, Indian has become one of the most affordable mobile data centre in the whole world. This has probably also lead to Indian data consumption reaching record highs.
NITI Aayog CEO, Amitabh Kant said that Indians are second to none in terms of monthly data consumption, not even to the Chinese. Kant stated in a tweet that Indians chew up 150 Crore GB of data each month. However, he didn’t state the source of the data.
“Amazing! With 150 crore gigabytes per month of mobile data consumption, India is now world’s number one mobile data consuming country. Its mobile data consumption is higher than that of the USA and China put together.”
This also sits well with another Ericsson report that said data consumption per head is 3.9 GB in India each month. That totals to a staggering 1.3 EB (10,00,000 TB) per month for the whole population. Also, this number is only expected to grow to 14 EB by 2023, reports Ericsson.
This is to be expected with data rates as low as Rs 200 for 30 GB/month in India. Having said that, this is largely due to the price wars that ensued Reliance Jio’s entrance in the market a year ago.
