The Mi Max 2 phablet is one of Xiaomi’s most anticipated releases for the year. Initially rumoured to be launching alongside the Mi 6, its reveal was pushed back to focus exclusively on the flagship’s launch. Recently we came to hear that the company is looking to launch the handset around May 25.
Now, a set of leaked images have surfaced on Slashleaks which show the Mi Max 2 alongside a protective TPU case.
These images show the handset in a champagne gold livery and are very reminiscent of the original Mi Max; the camera module though is a dead giveaway as the original Mi Max’s flash was towards the lenses right instead of its left. Moreover, Xiaomi has redesigned the entire external antenna assembly with them only wrapping on the top and bottom corners of the Mi Max 2.
The Mi Max 2 also retains the originals 6.44-inch display and general design sense as one can make out from the images. The general layout of the device including placement of volume rocker, power switch and the fingerprint scanner are all very much in line with the original. At the top, we can see that Xiaomi has an IR blaster and 3.5mm jack while at the bottom the device is outfitted with a USB Type-C connector flanked by speaker grills. The presence of the Type-C connector is important as it will mean that more devices in this price segment will start moving towards the new standard.
Hardware wise the Xiaomi Mi Max 2 is expected to be sporting the Qualcomm Snapdragon 626 octa-core SoC coupled with 4 GB of RAM and 64 GB of internal storage. At the back, the Mi Max 2 is likely to rock a 12-megapixel SONY IMX378 based sensor with a f/2.2 aperture and dual-LED flash. There might a higher end variant of the device which will pack in the Snapdragon 660 SoC coupled with 6 GB of RAM and 128 GB of storage. Both devices will retain the ultra-large 5000mAh battery unit though and more importantly be running Xiaomi’s in-house MIUI skin based on Android v.7.x, Nougat.
