A local Apple reseller in Malaysia had to cancel their weekend sale after 11,000 people lined up to buy their iPhones priced as low as $50 USD.
“Due to security reasons, [sic] we regret to inform you that the clearance sale will be put on hold until further notice,” the reseller announced on its Facebook page. “We are truly sorry for the Demo Clearance Event yesterday. We did not expect the magnitude. We were overwhelmed by the 11,000 [that] turned up,” it later added on a separate post.
A crowd of 11,000 people lining up outside the mall.
Some buyers even lined up for at least 19 hours before the mall opened its door. This is despite the FAQ provided by Switch clearly states that midnight queues will not be allowed. The retailer attempted to hand out queue tickets hours before the clearance sale, but the unanticipated number of the crowd later lead up to cancellation.
The weekend sale, hosted by local Apple reseller “Switch”, largely consists of demo products including iPhone 5S to 7, iPad Mini and Pros, Apple TVs, MacBooks, iMacs, and even iPod Touches. Only 10 of the $50 iPhone 5S is up for grabs, with only one unit each of the 16GB iPad Air 2 with Wifi ($77), 2011 64GB MacBook Air ($128), and 24-inch iMac ($255) were available. In all, only under 200 devices were available for sale.
