ASUS has launched its ZenFone AR, AR and VR focussed smartphone in India. The device debuted in the sub-continent in an event held in New Delhi. The smartphone was initially showcased in the Barcelona edition of MWC 2017 as the world’s first smartphone built ground up with Google’s Project Tango (AR) and Google Daydream (VR) platforms in mind. The crux of this experience is delivered by the highly customised camera setup integrated into the handset.
Upfront the smartphone is dominated by a 5.7-inch QHD (1440 x2560) Super AMOLED panel based display clad under a layer of Corning’s Gorilla Glass 4. ASUS claims that this display is 100% compliant with the NTSC colour gamut. At the heart of the smartphone is a Qualcomm Snapdragon 821 SoC optimised for Project Tango and Daydream workloads coupled with 8GB of RAM and 128GB of UFS 2.0 storage. Powering all this hardware is a 3300mAh non-removable battery with support for Quick Charge 3.0. On the OS front, the smartphone is running Android v.7.0, Nougat under ASUS’s proprietary ZenUI skin.
On the camera front, the ASUS ZenFone AR has a customer 23-megapixel rear camera with a f/2.0 aperture, 6P Largan Lens, TriTech Focus System composed of dual-PDAF, laser autofocus and continuous autofocus technology alongside 3x optical zoom. To maintain colour accuracy there is an RGB sensor as well. The device support 4-axis optical image stabilisation for still shots and 3-axi electronic image stabilisation for videography. The camera is also capable of taking shots in the RAW file format. For selfie duties, there is an 8-megapixel sensor upfront with an 85° wide-angle lens, f/2.0 aperture and dedicated dual-LED flash. The selfie camera is also capable of HDR and real-time beautification modes.
The chassis of the ASUS ZenFone AR is made out of metal with a diamond cut finish for a premium feel in hand. The smartphone boasts of a fingerprint sensor integrated into the home button below the display. On the connectivity front the smartphone is compatible with 4G VoLTE bands in India, WiFi 802.11 up to ac standard (dual-band 2.4GHz and 5.0GHz), Bluetooth v.4.2, GPS support and an NFC module. The smartphone has a USB Type-C connector for charging the battery and a 3.5mm audio jack as well.
ASUS has launched the ZenFone AR exclusively on Flipkart (goes on sale at 1600 Hours IST) for a price tag of ₹49,999. Inside the box, users will find the ASUS ZenEar S earphones crafted out of aerospace grade metal with support for DTS Headphone:X and Hi-Res Audio. In the box, users will also find an 18W fast charger which can top up the phone up to 60% capacity in under 20 minutes.
Apart from this Flipkart has announced exclusive offers to go along with the purchase of the handset, including a ₹2,500 discount on the purchase of a Google Daydream View VR headset. Reliance Jio customers will find up to 100GB of additional data valid till March 2018 with a complimentary Prime subscription.
