4.4

To fully utilize your high-speed internet subscription, you need a router that not only works exceptionally well but also packs lots of future-proof features that makes it suitable for long term use. You also need a router that has not only reliable software but also durable hardware, so you never have problems with failing components, and spend extra money on technicians to resolve the issue.

While internet service providers (ISPs) offer to rent routers that are compatible with their service, the cost of renting accumulates throughout the years. This makes purchasing your own router a worthwhile investment.

Quality but affordable routers are listed everywhere online, but competition is tough, and to make changes in the market, telecommunication equipment manufacturers try so hard to make the best affordable router possible. That is what Arris is trying to achieve with its Arris Touchstone TM1602.

In this article, we will go through some of its features and help you decide whether it is a good buy or you need to pass on this one.

Arris TM1602 Features

The Arris TM1602 is one of the more affordable routers around with DOCSIS 3.0. While it has been a while since the DOCSIS 3.1 was launched and implemented, the DOCSIS 3.0 still works great with many current internet subscriptions.

Since it is one generation behind, it allows manufacturers to launch routers that are inexpensive but still reach most internet speed subscriptions today. But there is more to the Arris TM1602 other than its support for DOCSIS 3.0.

1. 16×4 channel bonding (up to 24×8 with separate license)

The Arris TM1602 is DOCSIS 3.0 certified, which means it supports channel bonding. For personal use, the Arris TM1602 is capable of up to 16 downstream channels, and up to 4 upstream channels. However, if you are a business owner, you can opt for a separate license that will enable up to 24 downstream channels, and up to 8 upstream channels.

Channel bonding works by using each available channel to maintain the speed of your internet connection during peak hours. To accommodate all the data traffic during peak hours, your internet service provider has to limit the speed of each channel. A router that only supports DOCSIS 2.0 will suffer most from this since it only has a single channel to provide to the users.

Routers with DOCSIS 3.0, on the other hand, will provide a more stable internet connection because it has multiple channels to utilize. The Arris TM1602, for example, offers up to 16 downstream channels, and up to 4 upstream channels. It can even reach up to 24 downstream channels, and 8 upstream channels using separate licenses if you are a business owner. That means, even after the speed limitations set by the internet service provider for each channel, the TM1602 will still provide almost the same internet speed by combining the speed available at each of the channels. This will also allow your Arris TM1602 to support internet speed plans up to 640Mbps, theoretically.

2. High-quality, two-line VoIP service

Voice over Internet Protocol (VoIP), also known as IP telephony, works by converting our voice into a digital signal, allowing us to communicate directly from our computer, or VoIP phone using the internet instead of the traditional analog method, or Plain Old Telephone Service (POTS). It is a more efficient method, providing a wider range than our classic landline.

Going back to the product, the Arris TM1602 has two of these VoIP lines. It will give the option to use the other line for personal use, and the other one for business.

3. Dual-stack IPv4/IPv6

The Arris TM1602 supports dual-stack IPv4 and IPv6. The Internet Protocol version 6, or IPv6, is the next-generation Internet Protocol (IP), which aims to replace the more common IPv4 in the near future. It has a lot of new features like eliminating Network Address Translation (NAT), auto-configuration, better multicast routing, simplified, and more efficient routing among many others. Unlike the IPv4, which only uses 32-bit addresses for its internet addresses, the IPv6 utilizes 128-bit Internet addresses. About 1028 times larger than the number of addresses the IPv4 uses. However, as mentioned above, IPv4 is still the more widely use Internet Protocol and will remain that is for the next couple fo years.

Arris TM1602 both support the older IPv4 and the recent IPv6 standard. That means this modem will work just fine even we all completely transition to IPv6 standard in the future.

Conclusion

There is so much to like about the Arris TM1602. No wonder it is enjoying high ratings on Amazon. First of all, it is affordable, which makes it a worthwhile investment in the long run. It is also equipped with future-proof features like support for dual-stacked IPv4/IPv6, and DOCSIS 3.0 which offers up to 16×4 channel bonding for personal use.

While it will never win any awards for its bulky, and hard plastic build, the features you are getting with this modem outweighs its look. If you are in the market for good powerful modem, which supports many mainstream internet service providers and internet plans in the United States, I suggest you pick up Arris TM1602. You can never go wrong with this one.
