Every year, one of the most anticipated smartphones in the industry is Apple’s iPhone. And this year is no different. Since the launch of the original iPhone in 2007, Apple has been at the forefront of the premium segment of smartphones generally not altering the physical look and feel of their devices. The last major update was the iPhone 6 which updated the design and introduced the options of a larger display device to Apple fans.
Now on the decennial anniversary of the Apple iPhone the company is expected to release three new devices, the iPhone 8 alongside the iPhone 7s and 7s Plus and there have been multiple leaks of the same earlier alleging various difference designs. Some rumours discuss the removal of any physical buttons from the front of the device while others claim that it will retain the iconic home button. Apple is expected to make a significant break from tradition with the upcoming 7s and 7s Plus refresh though with it being expected that the back of the phone would be made of glass instead of aluminum. This will allow the updated models to support wireless charging as well.
The iPhone 8 though is expected to be a whole another beast if independent reports are to be believed, these allege that the device will feature a radical new design that sandwiches a stainless steel spar between two 2.5D curved glass panels. The display on the smartphone would be an OLED panel with a greater screen-to-body-ratio than the 83% achieved by Samsung’s Galaxy S8 and S8+ with its Infinity Display technology. Recently BGR claims to have obtained exclusive photos of an iPhone 8 mockup that showcases the final production design of Apple’s upcoming flagship. The mockup, in turn, has been built using the finalised schematics that were leaked from the production facilities.
These do not show the iPhone 8 with a fingerprint scanner at the back, however, there is still a possibility of integrating the TouchID sensor directly into the display as was alleged earlier, technology maturity notwithstanding. The photos of the mockup show the iPhone 8 with 2.5D glass panels on the front and back with a curve at their edges while in the center lies the polished stainless steel frame that acts like a spar.
The iPhone 8 retains the camera bump but instead of being oriented horizontally it has been placed in the vertical plane. The slight indent houses a new dual-lens camera module, a LED flash and a microphone. The camera optical zoom level will be same as was on the iPhone 7 Plus’ camera module although with improved optics and capture capabilities. On the right side, we see a SIM tray and unmarked buttons, there are a couple of these on the left side of the frame along with what is most likely the notification rocker. The bottom of the frame is dominated by the speaker grills which have a lightning port in the center. The device does not have any more openings or slots since Apple dispensed with the 3.5mm audio jack with the iPhone 7.
