When it comes to Alienware, it is safe to say that you will be getting exactly what you paid for. In the case of the AW2721D model, you get a beast of a machine with a 27-inch LED screen which is a standard pick for many gaming enthusiasts today.
What sets this model apart from other Alienware 27 inch monitors is the additions it brings to the table. The 240 Hz refresh rate is one of the highest seen in the market today. Paired with a response time of 1-millisecond, the monitor guarantees that not a single moment of your game will be missed out. This quick response is improved due to the low input lag. While the 1440p 240hz monitor is already leading in the polls, Alienware decided to spruce things up and add G-SYNC support, compatible with FreeSync which helps keep screen tearing to a minimum.

Let’s get down to the brass tacks of things. As a monitor, the main feature that we need to look into is the display performance. Reviewing what has been mentioned already, the AW2721D has a pixel resolution of 2560 x 1440 with a refresh rate of 240 Hz, which is much higher than some of its competitors like Philips and AOC who have a refresh rate of 144 Hz. The high pixel resolution makes for crisp images while the strong refresh rate helps in creating a smooth picture flow.
The monitor comes with an in-built overdrive mode whose presence does not go unnoticed. At its lowest setting, the overdrive helps clock in at a 240Hz of refresh rate. The overdrive is active on this model throughout and visibly tends to overshoot even at its lowest setting. While some worry about overshoot causing problems with the response time, at most the grey-to-grey response time clocks-in at 4.47ms.
To the average gamer, it would make sense to increase the overdrive levels to fast, but that won’t be a good idea. While the response time decreases to 3.57ms it comes with an increase in overshoot and we start to deviate from the ideal response. Extreme overdrive is the worst idea. While this helps you achieve the on-box 1ms response time, the overshoot skyrockets and puts enormous strain on the monitor. As to common knowledge, any response time below 5ms is more than enough to have a strong gaming experience. Therefore, keeping the overdrive low or fast should suffice.
3. NVIDIA G-SYNC Ultimate
NVIDIA is famous for the graphic enhancement technology that they have developed over the years. They rank high on most gamers list of equipment to purchase. While the graphic cards are powerful, they do not work well with a display that doesn’t support it. NVIDIA G-Sync technology was developed keeping this factor in mind.
A brief on this technology, the NVIDIA G-Sync is a hardware-based tech that helps manage the vertical blanking interval of the display panel. This provides gamers with a smoother and richer gaming experience. Its prime purpose is to avoid the phenomena known as screen tearing.
When first developed the display was required to be compatible with this technology. Over the years most monitors were made compatible and NVIDIA created three categories based on the performance. Amongst these, NVIDIA G-SYNC Ultimate provides the highest degree of performance.

NVIDIA G-SYNC technology, though exclusive for compatible systems in the early years, can now run on any monitor. However, if a monitor is NVIDIA certified, like the AW2721D, you can expect the system to perform at the highest level that it possibly can with colour accuracy, high dynamic range and minimum screen tearing.
4. IPS Nano Color technology
We have come far in display technology from the early days. We advanced from black and white to colour and now the goal has become to best represent a colour in the sharpest and most accurate way possible. To achieve this, the monitor has a wide 98% DCI-P3 colour gamut, equal to about 135% sRGB. Simply put, the colour quality is off the charts. The reds and greens are particularly well represented, increasing the overall picture quality.

Alienware AW2721D gaming monitor comes with many attachment options, both with input and output options. The display ports include two HDMI 2.0 ports and one DisplayPort 1.4. There are four USB ports, version 3.2 (Type-A; Gen 1; downstream) and one USB port, version 3.2 (Type-B; Gen 2; upstream). For sound, your headphones or speakers can be connected to a 3.5mm audio-out jack.
Side note, to access the highest refresh rate of 240 Hz, users will have to use the DisplayPort as the HDMI performance is limited to 144Hz. Also, keep in mind that the HDMI ports do not support HDMI 2.1.

While the height and tilt adjustable range is quite large, the swivel is very limited. The monitor can also be rotated into portrait mode in either direction due to its 90-degree pivot capability.
